2001 > 'MINI-KILLER' APPLICATIONS WILL...
TekPlus believes that moving into new market areas will not be enough for IP telephony service providers to maintain growth. Companies that do not presently supply IP telephony services are expected to have a major impact on service creation, development, delivery and deployment, see figure 1.3. Gareth Williams states, 'market development will provide new opportunities for companies like Microsoft or HP to deliver IP telephony services, in order to deliver a complete communications package to their end-users. The question for present day suppliers will be whether they can meet the demands of such companies, if so they have a viable business plan; if not they are a potential acquisition target.' The up-shot of the market is that IP telephony service providers have a lot to learn from the previous mistakes of fixed and wireless communications markets. Should IP telephony service providers chose the challenge of maintaining a market presence then they will need to:
The wholesale and retail markets will continue to grow and IP telephony service providers in each market have the opportunity to attack this growth. Dr.Mitul Mehta concludes, 'the new entrants will push IP telephony service providers to develop niche sub-segment products and services for the end-user market, understanding their requirements and an emphasise on customer service will be the key.'

The winners in the IP telephony market are those companies that are able to
deliver value to end-users and influence end-users. This does not mean that
IP telephony service providers need to own all the value delivered to the
end-user. There are few companies that have the ability to manage and
develop all the applications, services and access products that must meet
end-user expectations and perceptions. Gareth elaborates, 'the IP telephony
service providers of today need to become the hub of eco-system partnerships
and drive the value being delivered to end-users, in order to extract
improved margins and revenues.' There are a variety of companies that have
demonstrated their ability to start eco-system partnerships by embarking on
JAPA (Joint Ventures, Acquisitions, Partnerships and Alliances) strategies.
Companies such as iBasis have taken a significant step in delivering value
to its customers and eventual end-users. IP telephony service providers need
to open up access to their end-user community to content aggregators,
application developers, and other service providers in order to extract
significant revenue streams. IP telephony service providers need to evaluate
their core competencies, strengths and weaknesses and then determine and
develop a critical mass of JAPA strategies in order to head off new
competition. Figure 1.3 Influence of New Entrants on IP Telephony Market
